Kristi Lin with sons Stephen, 4, and David, 2, at Syre Elementary playground. Passing Feb. 7's bond will repair deteriorating drainage systems at all elementary playfields in the district. This creates a safe, healthy place for children to play and adults to exercise.

"People are sometimes surprised when they learn I grew up in Shoreline Schools, taught in Shoreline Schools and eventually moved to Richmond Beach so my own children could eventually attend Shoreline Schools. I tell them my husband, Dan, and I can't imagine a better place for our children. As parents of preschoolers, we know how important it is for young parents to support the Feb. 7 bond and levy. Well-cared for schools, fields and playgrounds are what turn good neighborhoods into great neighborhoods."

Like students throughout the district, these Shoreline 6th graders actively use technology in science, social studies, language arts and math. National experts say that learning with computers keeps students more engaged and on task -- and prepares them for next-generation jobs and careers.
The proposed bond will expand technology in all schools – with more connections for K-4th graders and laptop computers for use by all 5 th-12th graders – to assure our students are prepared for any career.

"The levy allows our district to spend the money to do our jobs. The bond creates a safe place for children to learn with the best tools – including technology. Technology is an integral part of our day. We use paper and pencil when it's important, and technology when that's important. Kids are now used to problem-solving both ways."

Lake Forest Park resident DeAnne Alvarez knows a little something about memories. After working for 22 years in the photo finishing business, she says “there’s nothing more satisfying” than helping people preserve the moments that are most important to them.

In the Alvarez family, many important memories have revolved around the Shoreline School District, which is why DeAnne strongly supports the passage of both the levy and bond.

When DeAnne’s daughter, Ashton, was in the eighth grade at a private school, she decided on her own that she wanted to attend Shoreline Schools. She was looking for a more diverse experience, with opportunities to meet more people. She found what she was looking for at Kellogg Middle School and Shorecrest High School.

“With Ashton, the more kids, the better,” says her mom. “She figures the more people she can meet, the more impact she can have.” Ashton has “flourished” at Shorecrest as a student, a cheerleader and a varsity softball player.

“Having pride in your environment is huge,” says DeAnne, noting that the bond issue will protect the investment of voters by upgrading the physical infrastructure of schools including wiring, heating and security systems. It also will pay for renovating the vocational/technical classrooms at both high schools.

As a manager for Eastman Kodak, managing the Costco and Bartell Drug accounts, DeAnne has seen for herself the impact of technology on everyday life. The bond issue will provide money to expand technology access in all schools for all students. “The technology will assure that our kids are prepared with the tools they need to go out in the workforce and compete.”

Shorewood Principal John Green, left, and Rick Meeder of Intel Corporation, right, present Anna Jolene Mork with a $5,000 check for being named a finalist in the Intel Science Talent Search competition. Shorewood also will receive $1,000. Mork will compete for the top prize -- a $100,000 college scholarship -- when she travels to Washington, D.C., March 9-14. Copyright - www.shorelineschools.org

Support of the Shoreline School District Bond/Levy is critical to
providing our students the opportunity to achieve their full
potential, and allowing our community to reap the benefit of all that
excellent education affords.

The funding for one out of every 5 teachers would disappear if this
bond/levy does not pass. People move to Shoreline/Lake Forest Park for
the good schools; this would shatter that reputation, and be
devastating for our children.

If it had not been for the generosity of voters in the Shoreline
School District who passed previous bond/levies, my daughter, Anna
Jolene, would not have had the necessary support to enter the Intel
Science Talent Search, one of the oldest and most prestigious
pre-college science competitions. Jolene attends Shorewood High
School, one of the few schools in the area with Biotechnology and AP
Chemistry classes. Access to these classrooms and the exceptional
teachers who teach them, such as Tracy Stoops and Dori Nagy, are what
ignited my daughter's passion for science and gave her the basic tools
to for her to enter into this competition. Her botany project was
selected as one of the 40 finalists in this national competition, and
is the only finalist project from Washington State.

My husband and I are so grateful to the voters who supported our
school district in the past, allowing the Shoreline School District to
have so many excellent teachers and specialized classrooms like
Biotechnology.

We want future children in the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park School
district to have the same opportunities that ours had,  so we are
working to get the Feb. 7th  levy/bond passed.
